This service is open to all individuals who want to share in this tribute to four chaplains of differing faiths who, in brotherhood, gave their life so others may have a chance at living theirs. Their act exemplified the meaning of duty to God and Country, and love of their fellow man. They were truly men of God who conscientiously made the ultimate sacrifice serving their fellow troops.
The four chaplains, of Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish faiths were aboard the troopship Dorchester in the North Atlantic, when on February 3, 1943, a torpedo struck at 2:00am. The ship sank within a very short period of time beneath the icy waters along with the majority of those aboard. Many of those who survived attributed their survival directly to the assistance and acts of compassion of the four chaplains aboard that night.
Organizational Units are encouraged to bring their unit banner and National Colors for an opening ceremony procession, and posting of their colors during the ceremony; bring your flag stands for posting of your colors.
